Base Ability to easily hide unnecessary entries in the menu, tool bars, and the pane tasks An operator who works with a database front-end application to brows or enter data does not need functionalities to modify an existing structure of database including tables, views, queries, forms, or reports. To make an end-user application with Base, ability to easily hide unnecessary entries in the menu, tool bars, and the pane tasks is desired. Current implementation offers all functionalities of Base to every user. To prevent a user from breaking a customized application, Base could have a feature to easily hide all entries of the menu and tool bars except the entries that will be needed to accomplish the tasks of the application and to additionally hide the pane tasks that allows a user to create a table, view, queries, from, and report. The settings could be saved in a document file of Base and could be retrieved from it when an operator loads the document file.

Base Ability to specify a certain form to be displayed at loading a Base file An operator who works with a database application to brows or enter data may want to quickly access to a certain form when she opens a document file of Base. The initial form might have some buttons with descriptions to take a user to a specific form, links to the web based on-line help, and some images to decorate an entrance of the application. Current implementation simply shows a list of forms at loading a Base file. A context menu on an existing form could have an entry to specify it as a default form which will be displayed first when a Base file is loaded. One of the listed forms could be accompanied with a mark denoting that the from is a default one.

Calc A Calc function CELL(“filename”, a cell reference) does not return native characters. A Calc function CELL(“filename”, a cell reference) returns characters in a percent hexadecimal notation (%xx) instead of Asian native characters. Nobody can use the returned value as a text. As designed by the UCB. The Calc function CELL(“filename”; a cell reference) could return native characters regardless of a type of scripts - Western, Asian, or others. Excel Japanese version returns native characters that users enter and find in the Explorer.

Calc A sheet of one page in Excel gets imported as a sheet of two pages in Calc Many Japanese users use a spreadsheet application as a word processor to prepare a document of one page sheet because a spreadsheet allows users to easily adjust a line spacing and indent. Therefore, a spreadsheet of one page should not be overflowed to two pages. There is a rumor that Excel renders Asian characters in slightly smaller size than specified font size.. There is a well-known technique - selecting all cells in a sheet, shortening a width of all columns equally to a width of a few letters, merging some cells to make a text box, filling a merged sell with a text where she wants to locate the text. Futher investigation would be needed. Excel English has a similar problem when loading an Excel file prepared with Excel Japanese.

Calc Reconsideration on a key bind inserting a line break in a cell of Calc When i attempt to insert a line break in a cell with Calc in the same way - by pressing a Shift-Enter - as i do with Writer and Impress, i cannot make it. Additionally, many users who had tried to migrate from the competitor to Calc asked how to insert a line break in a cell with Calc. Some of them probably could not find an answer and consequently abandoned their migration due to the bad experience. A key bind for inserting a line break: - Writer: Shift-Enter - Impress & Draw: Shift-Enter - Calc: Ctrl-Enter Difference between Excel and Calc. This may be rated as one of the most referred entries in the FAQ. Leave this to the User Experience team. Excel uses Alt-Enter to do that.

Calc Function DATEDIF() Current OpenOffice.org sometimes cannot work well with imported Excel files because of lack of some functions that Excel silently has ported from Lotus 1-2-3. Some departments like accounting and human resources often use the date related functions to calculate wages, interests, and so on. Lack of those functions definitely has blocked migration from Excel to OpenOffice.org. Lots of books available in the Japanese market describe Excel's own, hidden functions, which originally come from Lotus 1-2-3 for compatibility, for date related calculations. Adding the function into Calc. Providing the functions as an extension. datedif by Google

Calc Give a chance to choose which page style, shared or individual, will be applied to a newly appended sheet in Calc When she changes the page orientation of sheet1, that of sheet2 and sheet3 gets altered. In some cases, that behavior is expected, but in most cases, not desired. Change the initial number of sheets from 3 to 1. When a new sheet is about to be inserted by choosing the menu Insert - Sheet, a new dialog window will appear to ask which page style, the same as that of the current sheet or a new page style, to be applied to the coming inserted sheet. When a new sheet is inserted by clinking on the icon of tool bar, no dialog window appears. In this case, which page style, the same one or new one, is determined by the settings of Tools - Options. A sheet in Excel does not share its page style with other sheets.

Calc Translation: No need to translate a word Sheet for the default sheet names. Current translation of a word 'sheet' in Japanese version of Calc is '表' meaning a table. It makes things confused, e.g. “Look at the figures listed in the table on the Table1.” That can be substituted with “Look at the figures listed in the table on the Sheet1.” Excel Japanese does not translate default names of sheet, leaving them as Sheet1, Sheet2, and Sheet3.

Calc When exporting a Calc document into an Excel file, Asian font name rather than a Western font name could be exported. Excel running on Windows 98 or ME sometimes show rectangle shaped characters for Japanese ones when loading an Excel file exported from Calc. Because a Western font name is given by Calc to a cell, but its text is written with Japanese characters. Traditional Windows seems to get confused and fail to find the fallback default font. OOo 2.0.4 exports Asian font name instead of Western font name, which has been desired.

Join with template manager i-team in the Wiki and tell them good, practical ideas. Feature_-_Templates
Configuration A default template file for each application Having a default template file for Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, and others would solve many requests related to the default settings at a time. In case of enterprise wide installation, system integration vendors or system administrators have to achieve customers requirements. A large enterprise tends to have defined their own document policy such as default font name and size, size and margins of sheet, and the number of lines per sheet and characters per line. Yes, current implementation of soffice is capable of specifying a default template file for each application, but a way of instructions through the menu File - Templates - Organize to do so is slightly complex and cannot be done without user interaction. Because of a large amount of client machines, a simple way to deploy template files is demanded. Some experienced vendors know short cut tips for deployment of default template files by modifying one of the configuration files under the folder 'share/registry/data/' and by putting the template files in the publicly accessible directory, but such a fashion could not be widely accepted. One of the possible solutions: 1. Prepare directories share/template/<locale>/default/ and presets/.... 2. Put null template files: swriter.ott for Writer, scalc.ots for Calc, and so on in the directory. 3. Each application will confirm at startup if a template file exists and use it. If it does not exist, go fallback to the current implementation. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint have their own default template file. About document template location Change the Normal template (Normal.dot) Normal.dot in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates book.xlt in the folder c:\Documents and Settings\<userName>\Application Data\Microsoft\excel\xlstart or c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\office\xlstart

Default settings Printer related settings might not need to be loaded from a document file Within a computer-network-connected enterprise, when a recipient of a document file clicks on a print button in the tool bar, her printer in her department does not work. However, the sender's printer in his department mysteriously starts to make a handout of the document that he sent to her as an attachment of e-mail a few minutes ago. Sometimes, he gets multiple sets of handout because she clicks the button repeatedly until she gets her handout from her printer. If a user owns several types of printers, the current behavior sometimes becomes very useful. E.g. this document should be printed with a color ink-jet printer; that should be with a monochrome laser printer; like that. Printer settings, especially a name of the printer that is previously used by someone else, might not need to be loaded when a document file is opened by another person. Change the default value of an entry "Load user-specific settings with the document" from enabled to disabled in the dialog of Tools - Options - Load/Save 窶・General. I18n A choice of font for weak Characters A symbol black circle, u25CF, is rendered with Western font when the symbol follows Western letters while it is rendered with Asian font when the symbol follows Asian characters. The appearance of the symbol greatly differ each other. Western one is far smaller than Asian one. The same symbols here and there in a document look different. Such a situation might not be accepted by professional users. With Writer, typing a double quotation mark at the beginning of line inserts a fullwidth double quotation mark rendered with Asian font by auto correct for Japanese, entering an English sentence inserts it without problem, and closing the cite with a double quotation mark appends an ASCII double quotation mark displayed with Western font by auto correct. The two marks should be treated as a Western one. Weak characters, which cannot be simply classified into either Western nor Asian script, are sometimes rendered with undesired font - Western font instead of Asian one. Asian users, in most cases, expect such weak characters such as symbols and punctuations to be rendered with Asian font. When a weak character is located at the beginning of a text, what font should be used for it? It can be determined by the language of the document. But is it true? What about the line beginning with a double quotation mark followed by a English sentence cited in a Japanese document? In such a case, the starting quotation mark should be also rendered with a Western font. In general, when a user work on an Asian document, all weak characters can be rendered with Asian font. With OOo, one to three font names can be specified to a text. In Asian or CTL version of OOo, normally two font names are used. The one is for Western letters, the other is for local characters. To render a letter or character with proper font under circumstances, OOo has to determine what font will be used to render it. Unicode specifications defines blocks of letters. OOo can easily determine when a letter is classified into an obvious block, i.e. Western scripts or Asian scripts. For symbols and punctuations, OOo cannot determine its font by block, so OOo presume the same font as that of prior letter may be used.

Calc Supporting non-Western characters in a path for a linked copy With a linked copy from a cell in another Calc document to a cell in a current Calc document, the length of the path of the referred file is limited up to 20 orders of non-Western, e.g. Asian, characters. The limitation obstructs use of a linked copy with non-Western version of Calc. The module UCB employs a URL notation to locate a file. When non-Western characters exist in a path for a linked copy, Calc converts them into a special notation consisting of a sequence of a symbol percent and two hexadecimal letters - '%nn' - and then uses the converted URL for accessing the linked objects and store it into a Calc document file. Asian characters normally occupies three bytes in UTF-8, thus one Asian character consumes nine ASCII letters. The amount of data via the inter-process communication on Windows seems to be limited up to 256 bytes. 256 divided by 9 makes approx. 28. Calc could be enhanced to use native characters in a path instead of current %xx notation and recognize both notations for backward compatibility. Excel Japanese version accepts more than 100 Japanese characters in a path because it directly uses characters encoded in code page 932 (2 bytes per character). Relative path: i49362

Some users have reported some characters in EUDC are not displayed properly, but displayed as a different character provided in OpenSymbol. To simply correct it, the user should remove OpenSymbol from his computer. EUDC could be treated as one of fallback font. The order of fallback could be in the following order: EUDC, StarSymbol, OpenSymbol. This functionality seems to have been already implemented. Through the discussion in the Japanese ML, the fact becomes clear that soffice on Linux works with an EUDC font file while soffice on Windows does not work properly. We have done with UNIX variant. Word 2003 has 3 items on the ruler and do not require a user to hold a control key to use them.

Impress More fields such as a chapter, section, and subsection name and number that Writer has Some professional Japanese office suite users recently have started to migrate from a word processor to presentation to write a business letter, to draw up a proposal, and to author a book. The primary reason is that a presentation will theoretically never change a layout of document while a word processor often breaks a layout of document for several seasons. Imagine that a picture book does not require a text flow over pages. The population of this type of users seems to be increasing rapidly.

Writer Units of rulers on Writer can be in characters and lines Word 2003 Japanese uses different units of rulers. A horizontal ruler is measured in characters and a vertical ruler is in lines. That is definitely better for Japanese, and maybe including Chinese, Korean, and several Asian scripts. Current OOo/SO/SS and Word 2003 English have rulers measured in distance such as centimeter or inch. They can be substituted if the software is targeting at the Asian market.

VCL Special characters, a wave dash (u301c) and fullwidth tilde (uff5e), are mixed. With the same key sequence, an input method on UNIX variants normally gives an application a wave dash, while an input method editor on Windows variants gives it a fullwidth tilde. Those two special characters look similar each other. The one is up-side-down of other one. Since some operating systems do not come with font files that include a wave dash, a document including a wave dash prepared with OOo on UNIX variants could be exported, but it would be opened as a document with a missing glyph on some applications on Windows. A shape of wave dash is not included in the character set of Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) while that of fullwidth tilde is included in it. In the dawn of Unicode, Microsoft mapped the only character to a fullwidth tilde (uff5e) while JIS made a suggestion of mapping saying the character can be mapped to a wave dash (u301c). Most or all UNIX variants have followed JIS's suggestion. For many users, a way of mapping by Microsoft is better than that of JIS's suggestion. There is no practical solution on OOo. This should be solved with input method. CP932.TXT - Unicode.org

Realities: a) She gets interrupted with unwanted warning messages two times. b) The messages are enough to make her worried about violation of access right. c) The original file name has been lost upon her saving the document. VCL Reconversion with input method Cited from MSDN: The IME implements a feature called "reconversion". Normally the IME determines the lists of candidates based only on entries typed by the user. Reconversion allows the IME to determine one or more candidates based on the containing sentence (the context). The defined reconversion types are simple, normal, and enhanced. Reconversion is useful when a user notices a composition error in a document. The user can select the error and choose reconversion from a menu. The IME uses the context to determine the best replacement. The application can use ImmSetCompositionString to support reconversion. Most office software applications available in the Japanese market running on Windows posse this feature. A joint task force consisting of Japan, China, Korean, and some other countries and/or regions is planning to enhance the API of input method for UNIX variants this year. Writer Customizable attribute of non-printing characters Many Japanese users like to turn on View 窶・Nonprinting Characters. With current implementation, attributes of the special character denoting a paragraph break follows that of prior one. If the last character of a paragraph is colored in red, the special character get colored in the same color. If that is underlined, this gets underlined, too. Many Japanese users expect attributes of the special character is consistent within a document and should not follow that of prior one. Additionally, the brightness or some attributes of the special character should be configurable to make it easy to distinguish it from body of text. Most office software applications available in the Japanese market use consistent attributes for such special characters.

Write specification for a list of hanging characters in Tool/Options/Languages/Asian Layout/
Writer Hanging characters, forbidden characters With current implementation, some forbidden characters are unexpectedly located beyond the right margin. It is treated as a hanging character. With current implementation, there are two lists of characters in the dialog of Tools/Options/Language Settings/Asian Layout. The one is for “Not at start of line” and the other is for “Not at end of line.” OOo determines a character that can be hanged beyond the right margin using a set of characters listed in the “Not at start of line.” That is wrong implementation. Only punctuation is allowed to be hanged. In accident, a set of punctuation is listed in the list, but not intended. There is a need to add the third list of characters that defines hanging characters and use this list instead of “Not at start of line” to determine if the last candidate character of line can be a hanging character.
