Problems with periods in the filename of OpenOffice Write saved *.doc format files

When OpenOffice Write saves a file in MS Word *.doc format - with a "." (period) in the filename (eg; "my.file.doc") - MS Word can no longer read nor open the file at all. Not only that - it trys to install a document import feature - and things become very complicated and messy very quickly.

The following provides a functional breakdown and solution for the example "my_file_27.09.07.doc":

1. Open the file? Yes, Oo Write & MS Word.

2. Save the file? Yes, Oo Write and MS Word.

3. Read each other's saved file? No, MS Word cannot read an Oo Write saved *.doc format file that contains a period in the filename.

4. SOLUTION? Rename the file (in Windows Explorer for eg), removing the periods and replacing them with dashes or underscores (eg; "my_file_27-09-07.doc" or "my_file_27_09_07.doc").
