This image shows Calc tab selected. Once selected a corresponding color wraps around the lower pane, the program icon stay selected (glowing), and the text remains on top of the icon. The icons in the lower pane color coordinate with the selected program, as do the hover selection boxes (shown over New File in the image. This color linking is based on UIs Visual Design: Color Language.
The selection area for actions has been increased, as discussed in suggestions.
The Recent Documents tab and Watched Folders tab only display Calc Files. This file type sensitivity makes this feature more valuable than a Recent Documents type folder.
I was undecided whether the Templates icon should create a new template, or a new document from a template... I was leaning toward the latter, but I think either is fine.
